PREHAB: Don't Wait Until After You're Injured
What is "Prehab" and Why Building Durability is One of the Best Investments You Can Make
When most people think of physical therapy, they think of recovering from an injury or surgery. Maybe it's a sore shoulder that won't go away, knee pain that's limiting workouts, a low back injury that's keeping them from doing what they love, or post-surgery..
While helping people recover is a huge part of what we do at Power-Up Physical Therapy, it's only half of the picture.
The other half is something we believe in just as strongly: prehab.
What Is Prehab?
Many people think prehab is simply doing a few band exercises or some light stretching before a workout. While these can have a place, prehab is much bigger than that.
Prehab is a mindset.
It's taking a proactive approach to your health by building a body that is stronger, more resilient, and better prepared for the demands you place on it.
The goal isn't to guarantee you'll never get injured, that's impossible. The goal is to reduce your risk, improve your body's ability to tolerate training and increased loads, and create a foundation that allows you to stay active for years to come.
Build Capacity Before Problems Occur
One of the biggest reasons injuries happen isn't because movement is dangerous, it's because the demands placed on your body exceed what your tissues are prepared to handle.
Whether you're a CrossFitter, runner, mountain athlete, golfer, weekend warrior, or someone who simply enjoys staying active, your body is constantly adapting to the stress you place on it.
The stronger and more resilient your tissues become, the greater your capacity to handle those stresses. That's exactly what prehab is designed to do and instead of waiting until something hurts or post surgery, you're investing in building capacity before problems develop.
Stronger Tissues Are More Durable Tissues
When people hear "strength training," they often think about bigger muscles or lifting heavier weights. As a performance physical therapist, I think about something different. I think about tissue quality.
Progressive strength training helps improve the health and capacity of muscles, tendons, ligaments, and even bones. Over time, these different tissues become better equipped to tolerate the repetitive demands of lifting, running, hiking, skiing, pickleball, tennis, and everyday life.
That doesn't mean injuries can't happen. It means your body is more prepared when life throws challenges your way.
Better Prepared Bodies Often Recover Better. Especially Before Surgeries
Another benefit of prehab is something many people don't consider, healthier tissues often recover more effectively when injuries do occur.
If you've spent months or years building strength, maintaining mobility, and staying active, you're starting from a much better place than someone who has done very little preparation.
The same concept applies before surgery. This is where the term "prehabilitation" originally gained popularity.
Patients who improve their strength, mobility, and conditioning before surgery often experience smoother, faster recoveries and better outcomes afterward because they began their rehabilitation with greater physical reserves.
Think of it as putting money into a savings account before you need it. You're building reserves that your body can draw from when challenges arise.
Prehab Doesn't Have to Be Complicated
One misconception is that prehab requires an hour of corrective exercises every day, but it doesn’t. Often, it starts with identifying your weak links and giving them a little extra attention.
That might include:
Building strength through full ranges of motion
Improving single-leg stability and balance
Strengthening tendons with progressive loading
Addressing mobility limitations that affect movement quality
Managing training volume with adequate rest and recovery
Performing targeted accessory work 2-3x/week
Small investments made consistently often produce the biggest long-term results.
Stay Ahead Instead of Playing Catch-Up
At Power-Up Physical Therapy, we believe the best injury is the one that never happens. That doesn't mean eliminating all risks. If you're active, some risk will always exist.
Instead, we focus on stacking the odds in your favor. Our goal is to help you build a body that is prepared for the demands of your sport, your workouts, and your lifestyle.
Whether that means improving shoulder resilience for CrossFit, increasing tendon capacity for running, or strengthening your knees before ski season, proactive care almost always beats reactive care.
